Ancient Phoenician Ruins in Beirut’s Martyrs’ Square

Just a short time ago, this area was just a huge empty space and, in my understanding, the plan was to build here another parking. But as the workers began to dig, they found this:

Ancient Phoenician Ruins in Beirut's Martyr's Square

I believe this was found no earlier than a year or two ago. I read about it in the news, but it wasn’t very clear where exactly this site was. Today morning I accidentally stumbled on this and took this picture with my phone camera. The sun was so bright; I really couldn’t see what I was doing. Then I came home and found this photo in my gallery 🙂

There is nothing that tells you what it is, nobody guards it and, seems, nobody really cares. Beirut is full of this stuff, and since they found this, they discovered even more in nearby Gemmayze. I only assume this archaeological site belongs to Phoenician period but can’t really tell much more about it. There isn’t much information on the Internet either. At the very least, they left this alone.
