Famous for its cold temperatures Ifrane is literally the coolest place in Morocco. The lowest temperature in Africa -11°F (or -24°C) was recorded here in 1935. Ifrane has one of the coldest climates in Morocco.
The average temperature during the winter months is between 30°F-45°F, and 15°F-25°F during the summer.
Ifrane is the name of province in the Middle Atlas Mountains and a popular destination for winter sports. A cosmopolitan capital, also named Ifrane, is one of the biggest and the most prestigious towns in the province of Ifrane.
Ifrane (the town) was founded by French in 1929 and served as a resort for colonial families trying to escape the intense heat of Moroccan summer. There is a strong resemblance between Ifrane and French suburbs. Quite predictably, they wanted it to look similar to their homeland. French went as far as bringing their own seeds of flowers and even trees and planted them here. As a result Ifrane looked rather like a Swiss village than a North African town.
Even after gaining the independence from France, Ifrane didn’t lose its prestigious status. The new Moroccan elite flocked here and Moroccan king built his palace in Ifrane. As the one could expect, Ifrane is pleasant and well-maintained but quite expensive (however it is still cheaper than many resorts in Europe). There are many fine hotels and good restaurants.
Skiing in Ifrane
Ifrane is located about 5,500 feet above the sea level. Its freezing temperatures and heavy winter snowfalls are a magnet for skiers, both native and foreign. If you actually want to ski you will need to take a drive (or simply hire a taxi) to a nearby Mischliffen where you can enjoy skiing and other winter sports, such as cross-country skiing and snowboarding. It is possible to rent skis, but it is better to take your own as you probably prefer the latest equipment.
